Why should I see the dentist?

Question: Why do I need to see a dentist? My teeth and gums are feeling fine. Nothing is hurting, and I’m getting along just fine!

Answer: That may absolutely be the case, but there may be more going on involving your oral health than you know!

Your mouth is a very dynamic ecosystem and should be carefully evaluated at regular intervals. Did you know that many times, systemic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer can be first found in your mouth and an initial diagnosis provided by your dentist?

The American Dental Association recommends regular dental visits at intervals recommended by your dentist. For some patients, it may be twice per year. For others, it may be three times a year or more, depending on your oral health and other risk factors that may necessitate more frequent dental exams and cleanings.

So what about the question, “Nothing is bothering me, so why should I see the dentist?” Think about seeing your physician for your annual exam. Nothing may be hurting or perceived as wrong, but many times your physician can find early symptoms and treat small problems before they become larger, expensive, and even life-threatening issues.

High blood pressure initially doesn’t cause pain or discomfort. However, over time, it can lead to severe cardiac and systemic problems, and even death if left untreated. The absence of pain does not indicate health.

While dental problems were frequently life-threatening in the middle ages (did you know tooth infection was a leading cause of death?!), dental problems now are usually treated in one or two appointments, and are rarely life-threatening, although they still can be if left untreated.

Your dentist can examine your teeth, mouth, and head and neck area for current or potential problems. With regular exams, we can often find and treat small dental problems before large problems, like fixing cavities before they become large and need root canals or extractions. As mentioned above, your dentist will often find systemic problems before your physician, since they commonly show symptoms in your mouth first.
